Two weeks ago we went with some friends to Madera Canyon for a hike and picnic. As we got closer we could see a few dark and ominous clouds hanging over the mountains. But, we had come this far and were determined to see it through. As we got into to the canyon, it seemed evident that the prudent move was to picnic in the "covered" picnic area. I say it "seemed" prudent. The prudent move might have been a return to where there was some blue sky. Nonetheless, we have a story to tell this way. Almost with the first bite of our sandwiches, hail the size of golf balls (well, not quite) were pounding the roof of the picnic area. That was the prelude to the snow. After we finishing eating -- and a few laughs -- we decided the best hike was back to the car about 50 feet away. So, not a very long hike. We didn't see any other people in the canyon. They obviously paid more attention to the weather report. However, we did come across a few birds, which prompted my getting out of the car, standing in the snow, and taking a few photos:
