Photographing birds in flight is a challenge. 1) lighting can be an issue and you end up with just a silhouette. 2) birds are usually flying away from you and you end up with just the "backside." 3) even if you are lucky to get a side view, you may end up with the wing covering the face just as the shutter opens.
But occasionally, everything is perfect:
