Flycatchers: Part VI

Two of the rarer flycatchers to are the Tufted Flycatcher and the Buff-breasted Flycatcher.

First, the Tufted Flycatcher. Less than 10 records in the United States, split between Southwest Texas and Southeast Arizona. (Ramsey and Carr Canyon in the Huachuca Mountains). It is the smallest flycatcher in North America and has been nesting here for the past three years.

Second, the Buff-breasted Flycatcher found only in Southeast Arizona (Mount Lemmon in the Catalina Mountains).

Here a rare to the US Buff Breasted Flycatcher taken near Rose Canyon Lake on Mount Lemmon.

Buff Breasted Flycatcher at Rose Canyon Lake

Christine and I birded Mount Lemmon on Monday May 16th. We started at Rose Canyon Lake which was quite "birdie." One of the "prizes" here is the Buff Breasted Flycatcher. Although Sibley's says the BBF is mainly found in the Huachuca Mountains of Arizona, I have found Rose Canyon Lake on Mount Lemmon to be the most reliable place (at least over the last few years).

We were pleased not only to find this little guy (other than the even rarer Tufted Flycatcher, the Buff Breasted is the smallest flycatcher in North America).

And, not just happy to find, happy to find him posing in a variety of settings:

Birding Mount Lemmon, Arizona

I got a chance to bird Mount Lemmon with some dear guests and friends on Tuesday (April 11, 2016). Our target birds were the Olive Warbler and the Buff Breasted Flycatcher. Despite the snow still covering the ground, and the 38 degree temperature when we arrived at Inspiration Point, it was quite "birdy." Flocks of Western Bluebirds, Pygmy Nuthatches, Yellow Rumped Warblers; Red Shafted Northern Flickers chasing each other. Oh, and yes on both the Olive Warbler and the Buff Breasted Flycatcher.
